Overview

RocFall is a specialized software developed by Rocscience for simulating and analyzing rockfall hazards on slopes. Available in two versions—RocFall2 (2D analysis) and RocFall3 (3D analysis)—the software helps geotechnical engineers assess rockfall behavior by simulating trajectories, energies, bounce heights, and endpoint distributions of falling rocks. These simulations inform the design of protective measures such as barriers and berms. RocFall supports both statistical and rigid-body models, offering detailed visualizations and customizable slope geometries for accurate, real-world analysis. The tool is commonly used in mining, civil, and transportation projects requiring slope stability assessment.

Features and Capabilities

  • RocFall2 (2D Analysis):
    • Statistical simulation of rockfalls on 2D slope profiles.
    • Calculates velocity, energy, and bounce height along slope surfaces.
    • Determines final positions of rock blocks.
    • Includes features for placing berms and barriers to evaluate their effectiveness.
    • Supports rigid-body analysis to account for rock size and shape.
    • Exports results in various formats, including .png images.
  • RocFall3 (3D Analysis):
    • Simulates rockfalls in three-dimensional terrain environments.
    • Computes 3D distributions of bounce heights, impact energies, and trajectories.
    • Visualizes rockfall paths and impact zones in an interactive 3D space.
    • Supports lumped-mass and rigid-body rockfall models.
    • Enables advanced statistical evaluation of rockfall simulations.
  • General Capabilities:
    • Intuitive user interface for inputting slope geometry, terrain, and material properties.
    • Rock source placement tools (seeders) to define initiation points.
    • Integration of data collectors for measuring energy, bounce height, and velocity at key locations.
    • Seamlessly interoperates with other Rocscience software for full geotechnical workflows.
    • Provides detailed graphs, heatmaps, and histograms for analyzing rockfall behavior.
