Overview

Dips is a specialized software developed by Rocscience for the interactive analysis of orientation-based geological data. It serves as a comprehensive toolkit for both novice and experienced users, facilitating the visualization and interpretation of structural geological information through stereographic projections. The software enables users to analyze and visualize structural data using techniques akin to manual stereonets, augmented by computational features such as statistical contouring, mean orientation calculations, and both qualitative and quantitative feature attribute analyses. Designed primarily for engineering analyses of rock structures, Dips offers flexibility through its free-format data files, allowing for the examination of any orientation-based data.

Features and Capabilities

• Stereographic Projection Analysis: Visualize orientation vectors, density contours, planes, intersections, and traverses. Users can draw user-defined planes, sets, and utilize annotative tools for detailed analysis.
• Kinematic Analysis: Identify critical zones, vectors, and intersections on a stereonet overlay. Analyze planar and wedge sliding, as well as direct and flexural toppling failure modes. Results can be exported to Excel, detailing critical vectors and intersections for all failure modes.
• Jointing Analysis: Perform jointing analysis with built-in options: Joint Spacing calculates true or apparent spacing between a set’s joints; RQD Analysis assesses Rock Quality Designation; Joint Frequency counts joint occurrences along each 1D distance interval on a linear or borehole traverse.
• Data Filtering: Create multiple data filter query settings within the same Dips file. Display dynamically filtered data in various views (e.g., 2D Stereonet Plot, 3D Stereonet, Chart), with each view applying data filters independently.
• Import Wizard: Facilitates the import of data, allowing users to spend less time on data preparation and more on analysis.
• Export Options: Export images in various formats, including PNG, JPEG, GIF, BMP, EMF, WMF, and AutoCAD DXF, directly from the active view.
• Example Files: Dips comes with several example files demonstrating a wide range of problems that can be analyzed, intended for training and educational purposes.
