PCS Catastrophe Loss Indexes Around the Globe

PCS® is the global insurance industry’s leading source of independent catastrophe loss information. Beginning in the United States over 70 years ago, PCS now includes Canada, Mexico, Latin America (LatAm), APAC, and Turkey.

Gathering timely, comprehensive data on catastrophes that occur around the globe is daunting yet crucial to managing risks, investments, and resources

To set appropriate loss reserves, deploy field adjusters, and verify internal company estimates you must be able to define the extent and type of damage, establish dates of occurrence, and determine the geographic areas affected. Subscribing to the PCS reports gives you access to the necessary data to facilitate these decisions efficiently.

Comprehensive loss indices and data across six key regions

US – Catastrophe loss index

PCS investigates loss events in the United States, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. A catastrophe serial number is assigned if insured property losses exceed US$25 million and affect a significant number of policyholders and insurers. If the preliminary estimate exceeds $250 million, PCS resurveys until the estimate is deemed final.

Canada – Comprehensive catastrophe loss information

PCS Canada assigns a serial number to track discrete Canadian events causing more than C$25 million in insured property losses and determine which trigger reinsurance coverage. Every Canadian event receives at least one resurvey and if warranted additional follow-up resurveys (every 60 days until the final estimate).

Mexico – Aggregated catastrophe loss data

PCS Mexico investigates disasters projected to exceed MX$300 million and assigns serial numbers to help you track losses from each catastrophe. The threshold for resurvey estimates (every 60 days until the final estimate) is MX$950 million (This product is available for use in the United States, Mexico, and many other countries).

APAC – Trusted catastrophe loss data

Serial numbers are assigned for catastrophe events that exceed US$2 billion in Japan or US$2.5 billion in the rest of the region to be considered for designation under PCS APAC. PCS releases updated estimates every 90 days until the team arrives at a final estimate.

LatAm – Catastrophe Loss Data

PCS LatAm covers all natural and man-made catastrophes (excluding marine) likely to cause insured losses of US$500 million or more: Events in Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Honduras, and Peru dating back to 1998, and non-U.S. Caribbean losses exceeding US$2 billion dating back to 2017.

Turkey – Investigating and assessing insured catastrophe losses

PCS Turkey investigates catastrophe events causing more than T₺10 million in direct insured property losses and affecting a significant number of policyholders and insurers. PCS Turkey assigns qualifying catastrophes a serial number to track losses and reserves related to a single, discrete event.
