HPC-optimized instances powered by 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors
Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) Hpc6id instances, powered by 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, offer cost-effective price performance for memory-bound and data-intensive high performance computing (HPC) workloads in Amazon EC2. Hpc6id instances deliver up to 2.2X better price-performance over comparable x86-based instances for data-intensive HPC workloads, such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA). These instances are built on the AWS Nitro System, providing 200 Gbps for low-latency inter-node communication. EC2 Hpc6id instances make it more cost efficient for you to scale HPC clusters on AWS. Optimized for per-vCPU performance, you can use EC2 Hpc6id instances to consolidate workloads on fewer instances so that you can complete jobs faster and reduce infrastructure and software licensing costs. These instances are ideal for your most data-intensive and memory bandwidth-bound workloads such as crash simulations using FEA and seismic reservoir and structural simulations. With EC2 Hpc6id instances, you can also lower compute costs for your HPC workloads while taking advantage of AWS elasticity and scalability. Run your HPC clusters at virtually any scale with fewer cost barriers.
Benefits
High performance and cost efficiency
EC2 Hpc6id instances are purpose built to offer cost-effective price performance for data-intensive, tightly coupled HPC workloads. They include up to 5 GB/s memory bandwidth per vCPU and up to 15.2 TB local storage. Hpc6id instances are available in a single Availability Zone, enabling workloads to achieve the low-latency network performance necessary for tightly coupled node-to-node communication for HPC applications.
Massive scale for HPC simulations
EC2 Hpc6id instances are designed to scale HPC clusters up to tens of thousands of cores by using increased per-vCPU throughput, up to 5 GB/s memory bandwidth per vCPU, and unrivaled DRAM performance. The cores are used for running Intel architecture at scale and computing numeric workloads, such as finite element analysis, faster.
Maximized resource efficiency
EC2 Hpc6id instances benefit from the AWS Nitro System, a collection of building blocks that offloads many of the traditional virtualization functions to dedicated hardware and software. The Nitro System is used to deliver high performance, high availability, and increased security.
Features
Powered by 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors
EC2 Hpc6id instances are powered by 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors (Ice Lake) with an all-core turbo frequency of 3.5 GHz. They include support for always-on memory encryption by using Intel Total Memory Encryption (TME). EC2 Hpc6id instances also support Intel Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX-512) instructions for faster processing of cryptographic algorithms.
Uses Intel architecture for HPC
Take advantage of Intel-specific features, such as Math Kernel Library (MKL), to exploit Intel CPU core counts and architectures to reach higher optimization and parallelization. Use AVX-512 to accelerate performance for workloads such as scientific simulations.
Built on the AWS Nitro System
The AWS Nitro System can be assembled in many different ways, giving AWS the flexibility to design and rapidly deliver EC2 instance types with an ever-broadening selection of compute, storage, memory, and networking options. Nitro Cards offload and accelerate I/O for functions, ultimately increasing overall system performance.
